How to Decorate Your Home With Garland

Tis the season for decking the halls and there's nothing more traditional than garland. It's easy to drape and weave throughout your interior space to create a festive look for holiday parties and cozy nights at home. The versatility of garland makes it an easy piece to dress up or down to complement your existing decor and add a touch of festive charm to your entryway, gathering spots, and dining areas. Let's look at some unique ways to decorate your home with festive garland this holiday season.

Frame the Front Door

Drape garland around the front door to create a warm, welcoming look for the neighbors to enjoy. Simply frame the entryway by draping it over adhesive hooks or hangers that can be purchased at your local hardware store. They are strong enough to keep your decor in place without damaging your home in the process. This festive touch will beckon friends and neighbors to cross the threshold into your home for good company and holiday cheer.

Trim the Banister

If your home has a staircase, then your banister is a blank canvas fora luxurious holiday garland. Weave or drape the greenery down the banister to create a lovely focal point that's warm and inviting. Weave in bright decorative ribbon to add contrast and depth, or simply trail the greenery down the staircase to create a minimalistic look. Attach the garland to the banister with floral wire or festive ribbons that can easily be removed after the holidays.

Spruce Up the Mantle

Storybooks and holiday movies often depict mantles decked out in festive decor, complete with stockings hanging for Santa's arrival. Create a stunning focal point by draping garland across your mantle, and get creative with add-ins and accents. Place candles, nutcrackers, or Christmas trees throughout the garland to create height and add a pop of color with small ornaments, red berries, and painted leaves. If your home doesn't have a mantle, get creative with other flat surfaces in your gathering areas. The hutch, buffet, piano, and credenza are all perfect options for garland.

Deck the Dining Area

Your dining space deserves to be decked in festive cheer, and it's so easy to achieve with a few strands of garland. Trail greenery across the table runner, and add decorative pieces throughout to add depth and your personal touch. Add-ins like holiday candles can create a warm ambiance and natural elements like berries or pinecones are a quick way to add color and dimension.

Think beyond the table as well. Use garland to decorate the chandelier, door frames, and windows to completely transform your dining space as guests gather for a holiday meal. If you choose to hang garland from the chandelier, make sure it is made from lightweight materials so it doesn't damage your fixture through the holiday season.

Interior Accents

Walk through your home to find unique places to add festive garland. Window frames and interior door frames are the perfect spots for hanging wreaths and draping garland. Use adhesive hooks to make decorating (and tearing down) an easy job. Wind greenery around existing curtain rods, and place a tension rod at the top of your door frame to create a convenient place to hang garland (and mistletoe!) Make sure hanging garland is lightweight so it doesn't damage the existing structure, and add ribbon and lights to make your decor pop.
